Charles was a vulnerable client living with both heart disease and a brain injury, and was recently scheduled to move out of the city to a beautiful rural village, a place where he had always imagined himself living in later years.
As the nation became aware of the speed that COVID-19 was spreading the government called for the vulnerable to be shielded at home. It became clear that Charles would need more support than a carer who visited him just a few hours a day. This became yet more evident when it was discovered that Charles had had a fall, and had sadly spent the night on the floor. He was frightened of being taken to hospital due to the current pandemic, was understandably very distressed.
As specialists in live in care, we were approached about Charles’ case. We took the time to understand his complex needs, as well as his personality and likes and dislikes, to find the perfect carer to compliment Charles’ life.
We narrowed down our search and found Louisa, not only a skilled live in carer, but also an experienced healthcare worker, having worked in both the critical care and high dependency units for the NHS. As Louisa understood the importance of infection control she wasn’t surprised when we asked her to self-isolate herself for ten days in preparation for her move to the country to care for Charles. During this time, we introduced Louisa and Charles over the phone, as well as a video call set up by a family member.
Once Louisa had successfully self-isolated for the recommended time, she moved in with Charles to provide both care and companionship. After getting to know each other remotely over the week Louisa and Charles were able to form the beginnings of a friendship, making the transition to live in care smooth and rewarding for both parties.
