What is 24-hour care?

24-hour care means that there is carer who is awake and on duty present with your loved one at all times of the day and night. 24-hour care at home means that a team of carers will provide care for the individual within the home. This can be particularly important for those that need help with daily activities but also tend to have restless nights and need support during these hours. If your loved one is prone to wandering it can also be reassuring to know that they have someone there at all times to keep an eye on them. 24/7 care can be adapted to suit the needs of the cared-for individual so that they are still able to retain some independence.

 

What are the differences between 24-hour care and live-in care?

Live-in home care differs from 24-hour care because with 24-hour care the carers do not necessarily live within the home of the cared for individual, whereas with live-in home care, the carer will live within the home but may not provide 24-hour waking care.

 

Often for 24-hour care, carers will share shifts within a team of carers and they will stay within the home during their shift but swap with another carer at the end of their shift. With live-in care, the exact hours that a carer will work will depend on what they have been engaged to work. Many live-in carers will work 7-day weeks and around 8 hours per day for a certain amount of time and then they will take some time off. Since there is usually only one live-in carer giver working at any one time, the live-in carer will need to take breaks during the day and get a period of 8-hours when they do sleep. The carer and your loved one will generally work out a routine that works best for both sides, and there’s unlikely to be a fixed schedule. If you would prefer a care team to be around to support your loved one for the whole 24-hour period, then 24-hour care at home is what you need.

How much does 24-hour care cost?

24-7 care means that someone is employed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, meaning that costs can be high. If the hourly rate of care is just £15 per hour then the weekly cost will be over £2500 per week. The hourly cost of care at home usually falls between £15 and £30 but if you want 24-7 care then costs are usually calculated on a weekly or monthly basis and can vary greatly depending on the care package you opt for and the area you live in. In some cases, the costs for caregivers employed 24-hours a day, 7 days a week can reach as high as £3,000 per week.

 

What are the advantages of 24-hour care?

 

Round the clock support

The advantages of 24-hour care at home are that your loved one will have round the clock support. Having someone in attendance during both the day and night can help reduce the risk of falls and provide you with peace of mind that your loved one is not alone at any time.

Independence

Your loved one will still retain their independence where safe to do so and they can choose what to eat, when to eat, when to shop and when they want to do activities. It will just be with the support of someone there to ensure that they are not struggling alone.

Continuity of care

There is often good coordination within the care team so that there is continuity of care and your loved one becomes familiar with their care team, which is important for them to feel safe and in trusted hands.

Familiar surroundings

Your loved one can remain in familiar surroundings and with their belongings, which is important for many people. Change can be challenging for anyone but it can be more difficult for older people to adjust to. By remaining at home, it will help your loved one to feel less disrupted and maintain their identity.

Pets

If your loved one has any pets, then having at home 24-hour care at home means that the care team will come to your loved one’s home, allowing them to remain with their pets. This is extremely important to some people and you avoid the difficult scenario of having to separate your loved one from their pets, which is usually the case if they are to become residents at a care home. The care team are also able to support your loved one by taking care of any pets they may have.

Social network

A support network can be extremely important for maintaining a good quality of life. For those who are less mobile, it can be difficult to keep their social lives. By having a carer come into the home of your loved one, they will be able to get help with transport and mobility and retain social networks within their local communities. Keeping your loved one at home can help keep visitors frequent, whereas if they move to a care home, their support network may diminish. Many older people do form friendships within a care home environment, but these can take time to develop, and contact with close family and friends from before may be reduced, which can be upsetting.

Is 24-hour care the right choice for me?

24-hour care is the right choice if you think that your loved one would benefit from having carers around them at all times to ensure that they have constant support, are never lonely, have support with household chores, personal care, and any activity that they are less able to do independently.

 

If you are sometimes concerned that your loved one is missing out on hobbies or social events due to not feeling confident or if you have noticed that they have difficulty with accessing events, then having a friendly carer by their side can be really advantageous in helping them maintain their social lives.

 

A 24-hour carer will also help you have peace of mind if your loved one is prone to falling or needs help with their mobility around the house. Having someone near them at all hours of both the day and the night can help minimise any accidents or injuries they may sustain by trying to do things by themselves.

 

24-hour care is usually provided to those people who need the most support so it may also be something that you wish to look into in the future, if you think that your loved one is currently able to manage with less support for the time being.

 

24-hour care at home can also be provided for couples living together and this can work out to be more cost-effective than a residential home, whilst allowing the couple to remain together within their own home.

 

24-7 nursing care may also be required for those that have more complex medical health needs and therefore the support of specialists. In these cases, a nursing home may be preferable for your loved one’s needs, however, there are specialist care professionals who come into the person’s home who may be able to manage the complexities of care required.
