There are many ways that a carer can ensure that s/he promotes dignity, privacy and independence when providing care. The main ways are to seek permission from the client before carrying out a care task, ensuring the client’s doors and curtains are closed, covering parts of the body whilst washing and dressing, and ensuring nobody else is in the room when personal care is being carried out.

Personal care assistants provide personal care such as washing, dressing and incontinence care. They can also offer support with cooking, cleaning and administering/prompting medication.

A personal care plan is a support plan devised by either a health care professional, the client themselves or family member of the client. It provides the carer with a detailed explanation of how the client wishes to be supported.

Personal care usually refers to assistance with washing, bathing, dressing, continence care, oral hygiene and shaving.
