I describe myself as full of joy. Every day is a new day and I wonder what I can learn and get from life. I definitely try to look at life in a positive way. Even if something bad happens I always say “every cloud has a silver lining.”

Martin is Croatian and is a fully qualified nurse in Croatia. He is currently completing his Masters qualification in Zagreb so that he can work as a nurse abroad. In the meantime, Martin has started to work as a live-in carer in the UK as this brings him the similar joys of looking after people that nursing does.
I am incredibly reliable, motivated and dedicated and these are important aspects of being a carer. My colleagues would probably describe me as a workaholic because at that point I was in a situation where I was working 3 different jobs per day! I find people appreciate my work and they support me with it, which is motivating.
I have experience with 40 youth exchanges around the EU and I met more than 2000 people within the programme. I was able to experience many different cultures and types of people. I have worked in other fields not related to nursing and care such as in paperwork, logistics maintenance, storage and delivery, so there is very little that scares me in terms of work!
I am interested in helping others and I have never had an issue with adapting to something new so although I would like to continue working in palliative care, since this is what I have been doing for the past year, it is not essential.
Martin has worked in a college for students with disabilities, where the students lived at the college and required support during the day and the night. Martin assisted them with personal care, meal preparation, feeding, toileting and taking them to the shops. The work required him to be a team player but also to have a patient and empathetic nature. Martin has assisted with mainly elderly clients with dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, palliative care needs, incontinence, cancers, disabilities and paralysis. More recently he has been volunteering in Lisbon with a family who were in need of help with daily jobs.
My hobbies include mostly sports and I have been training in cycling for 3 years, as part of the National mountain biking team in Croatia. I am also passionate about running, hiking and swimming and when I was younger, I did karate for 7 years. I am definitely an advocate for sports and I try to encourage others to also experience the joys of exercise.
“I was extremely impressed by Martin’s professionalism, compassion, tact, care and work ethic.”- A.A- son of client
