Adapting the Home Environment for Ageing in Place

Introduction

As we age, adapting our home environment becomes increasingly important to help us maintain our independence and quality of life. Ageing in place – the ability to live safely and comfortably in one’s own home and community for as long as possible – is the goal for many older adults.

Yet homes are often designed and are more practical for the needs of younger people. Making some simple changes to the layout, safety features, and accessibility of your home can go a long way towards enabling you to age in place successfully. This blog offers research-backed tips for modifying your living space to accommodate your needs as you get older.

What Research Tells Us

Studies show that falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among adults aged 65 and over. Given that older people spend much of their time at home, many of these falls were found to occur due to the home environment. Concerningly, more than 3 million people in the UK have osteoporosis, which increases the risk of fractures. Indeed, the risk of osteoporosis increases with age, such that if an elderly person falls, they may be at an increased risk of serious injury.

A cluttered, poorly lit, and obstacle-filled home can contribute to an increase in likelihood of a fall. Importantly, research has demonstrated that relatively inexpensive home modifications can significantly reduce the risk of falls and can help older adults remain independent for longer. There is strong evidence that minor home adaptations are an effective and cost-effective intervention for preventing falls and injuries, improving performance of everyday activities and mental health.

Evaluate Your Current Home Setup

Take the time to do a comprehensive walkthrough of your home, looking through the lens of both current and potential future needs. Pay close attention to areas that could pose hazards. Some things to be aware of are loose rugs, slippery floors, dim lighting, and cluttered walkways. Try to open up wardrobes, cabinets, and storage spaces, as clutter can build up without us realising. It can help to have a friend or family member walk through with you, as they may spot issues you’ve become accustomed to over time. Make a list of problem areas to focus on addressing.

Simple Modifications for Safety and Accessibility

There are many quick and affordable DIY modifications you can make to improve the safety and accessibility of your home:

  • Install grab bars inside and outside of the tub/shower and near the toilet.
  • Remove throw rugs and mats, or use non-slip rug pads to secure them.
  • Improve lighting by adding more lamps and brighter bulbs, especially in walkways and bathrooms.
  • Remove clutter in hallways and other high-traffic areas.
  • Replace doorknobs with lever-style handles which are easier to grip.
  • Replace standard faucet handles with lever or motion-sensor faucets.
  • Install elevated toilet seats to make sitting down and standing up easier.
  • Install ramps over raised thresholds.
  • Declutter rooms by removing extra furniture and clearing walkways.

Working with a Caregiver or Modification Expert

For more advanced home modifications that require construction work like widening doorways, installing stairlifts, or adding a first-floor bedroom and bathroom, you may need professional assistance.

A home health aide or occupational therapist can evaluate your needs and make recommendations for home adaptations. They can also provide guidance on equipment like mobility devices, adjustable beds, and other items to improve accessibility and ease of use within your home. Many communities also have non-profit organisations that offer modification assistance to help low-income older adults remain safely in their homes.

Adapting your home as you age doesn’t have to be a major, expensive project. With some focused attention on removing obstacles and improving safety, you can cost-effectively modify your space to maximise your independence and comfort. Consult experts when needed, but don’t underestimate what you can do yourself.
