Understanding UTIs, Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

What is a UTI?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria infiltrate any part of the urinary system, comprising the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra—the channels responsible for urine elimination from the body.

UTIs are a prevalent issue, particularly among women who have a shorter urethra than men, and they can bring about discomfort and delirium in older patients

Who’s Prone to UTIs?

Though UTIs can affect anyone, certain groups are at a heightened risk. Elderly individuals, due to weakened immune systems and incomplete bladder emptying, are particularly vulnerable. Women are more susceptible than men, mainly due to their shorter urethras.

Pregnant women face an elevated risk because of hormonal changes and pressure on the bladder from the expanding uterus. Additionally, individuals with diabetes or compromised immune systems are more predisposed to UTIs, while sexual activity can introduce bacteria into the urinary tract.

Recognising UTI Symptoms

Some of the hallmark symptoms of a UTI include:

  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • Lower abdominal pain or pressure
  • Urine that appears cloudy, smells unusual or contains blood
  • Mild fever and chills

If the infection progresses to the kidneys, symptoms might escalate to include back pain, nausea, and vomiting. UTI symptoms can arise suddenly and cause significant discomfort.

Understanding the Causes

The primary culprit behind UTIs is the bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli), commonly found in the digestive tract. Bacteria can access the urinary tract through various means:

  • Improper wiping after a bowel movement
  • Pregnancy
  • Sexual intercourse
  • Usage of diaphragms for birth control
  • Introduction of urinary catheters or other medical instruments

Once inside the urinary system, bacteria can ascend to the bladder, triggering an infection.

Treatment Approaches

Typically, UTIs are managed with a course of antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional. It’s crucial to complete the entire antibiotic course as directed to prevent antibiotic resistance, even if symptoms subside.

Adequate fluid intake, such as water, can aid in flushing out bacteria. Some people find that cranberry juice also helps to clear the bacteria. Pain relievers can alleviate UTI discomfort. You should notify your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.

Prevention Strategies

To mitigate the risk of recurrent UTIs, adopting certain lifestyle practices can be beneficial:

  • Increase daily water intake
  • Urinate promptly when the urge arises
  • Avoid potentially irritating feminine hygiene products
  • Practice proper wiping technique from front to back after using the toilet.

Promptly seek medical attention if you experience UTI symptoms to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Untreated UTIs can escalate to more severe kidney infections. Pay attention to your body and prioritise seeking medical care if a UTI is suspected.
