How does incontinence care work?

Learn about The Live in Care Company’s approach to providing incontinence care.

Elderly catheter care at home

Many of our carers are trained and experienced in catheter care and helping those with incontinence to be as independent as possible. A catheter is a thin and flexible tube that is used to empty the bladder and collect urine in a drainage bag. It can be used as a treatment for urinary incontinence for both a short term and a long-term basis.

When an elderly family member needs to use a catheter, personal hygiene is paramount to avoiding infection. Our carers can help with personal care to ensure that the catheter and the area around the catheter are kept clean, reducing the risk of contamination. Our carers can also empty drainage bags, ensure they are worn in a comfortable position and ensure that the client is taking on enough liquid to assist with urine flow.

Sometimes, if someone is struggling with incontinence, they may avoid drinking fluids to avoid complications with incontinence issues, leading to dehydration, and, potentially, other health concerns.

If your loved one has issues with bowel incontinence, then ensuring that they have a diet that includes plenty of fibre, such as wholemeal bread, can encourage regular bowel movements and minimise the risk of constipation.

If your elderly loved one is suffering from incontinence you should consult your doctor or specialist nurse. Once the cause of incontinence is known it can often be easily cured or managed using measures such as medication, exercise or pads.

Our elderly live-in carers are thoroughly vetted and rigorously interviewed and reference-checked, giving you the peace of mind that your loved one is in good hands. The carer of your choice will become familiar with your needs and routine, helping to ensure continuity of care and building a relationship that will improve your quality of life. This can be vital to retaining independence and dignity when experiencing incontinence.

If you are looking for a carer to help you with incontinence care, contact a member of our live-in care agency on 0118 449 2373 for a free care assessment.
